Having An “Objective” Statement - Here is MY question to you about an "Objective" statement. What does it really do for the employer? Do you expect the company to see if "your" objective fits into "their" needs?

My Advice ?? Here is your objective – A NEW JOB ! Putting yourself ahead of the pack - whatever it takes to get you there!

5. Not Including a Summary Section Which Makes an Initial Hard Sell

This is one of the job seeker's greatest tools on the resume. Candidates who have done their homework will know the skills and competencies important to the position. The summary should demonstrate the skill
level and experiences directly related to the position being sought.

The Job Seeker Should Create a high-impact summary statement which captures the attention of the manager, highlighting achievements and skills along with education if advanced, and citizenship if applicable to the possition (ie - a security clearance will be required to be employed there)

Soft Skills need to be emphasized - interpersonal communications, ability to work collaboratively
and commitment to achieving corporate goals. Make sure your personality shines through. The
employer should find you to be likeable and well suited for the team.

6. Too Focused on Job Duties
(REFER BACK TO OPENING PARAGRAPH – WHO IS THE AUDIENCE) Your resume should
NOT be a list of job duties and responsibilities. The interviewer wants to know what your job was –
so state what you did with how you made a difference at each company, providing specific
examples. For each position held, give a brief synopsis of the scope of your responsibility. Then
show how your performance benefited the company. Give examples of how past initiatives led to
positive outcomes such as enhanced efficiency, faster time-to-market, monetary savings.
Measureable Accomplishments are powerful - include actual performance figures. Focus on your
most impressive technical projects/ accomplishments. What types of challenges did you face? What
did you do to overcome the challenges? How did your performance improve the organization's
bottom line?
For contract work, provide a bulleted list of your top projects, reason for hiring you, scope of the
project, your approach to the project, work performed, and results.

Resume Ad !

1. Too short or too long?
What's the "right" length of a resume? The real answer is - there is no rule about this. Using common sense would indicate that grabbing and holding the reader's attention is the desired outcome for starters.

Unfortunately technical candidates usually make one of two critical errors on their resumes -- either the document is excessively long with excruciating detail on every assignment ever completed, or too short with
hardly any hints at involvement/achievement

Many resume authors try to squeeze their experiences onto one page, as they've heard resumes shouldn't be longer. These job seekers may delete impressive achievements or leave it too vague to be noticed. Again - know the audience. .

At the other end of the spectrum are the candidates who ramble on about irrelevant or redundant experiences; citing every award within the body of each position (rightfully listed at the bottom) including detailing almost marketing-like information about the employer. The interviewer knows the competition - or can Google them - the idea is to highlight who YOU are and what YOU can do. Diverting the attention for the sake of confirming what a great company you work for is like waving a red flag.....why?

2. Functional Resume
It irks hiring managers not to see the career progression and impact you made at each position. Unless you have an emergency situation, such as virtually no work history or excessive job-hopping, avoid the functional format.

3. Personal Pronouns and Articles
There should be no mentions of "I" or "me," and only minimal use of articles. Here is where a "ghost author" or "editor" can be of real help! Making a statement about achievement without personal pronouns makes the resume less subjective .... you want the reader to translate your achievements into their team! without a major ego !

A Resume Is An Ad, Not A Fact Sheet
Now that I have your attention ...............

Know Your "Buyer/Employer" - To Whom Are You Selling Yourself ?
(Question to Ask yourself) - To Whom Does the Position Report? That information will help you to focus the tone of the information .

Upper Management - They set the strategic direction and how best to utilize funding, new product decisions, and watching and responding to trends in the marketplace. The skills sets may be different, BUT the other criteria — critical thinking skills - people who are adaptable and amenable to change, are the same across the board. The rapid pace in today's business requires a closer scrutiny on profitability. A client of mine - who missed some critical information regarding a co-supplier design to a major client - is down $20MM a quarter! To catch that kind of impact on the bottom line and reverse the trend down, requires review of the value-add of every employee and the ability to rapidly move in a counter direction - YOU must have shown your creativity and ability to be valuable in that kind of changing environment BEFORE it happens. If you didn't - you will find yourself on "the List". Good solid people - good employees ... losing their job. Don't be that guy/gal ! As I always preach ... be a boy/girl scout and "Be Prepared".

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://reynoldsrecruiters.blogspot.com/2011/07/good-news-and-bad-news.html' title='The Good News and ...

Not each of these will fit your personality - but I'm hoping they will spark some thoughts and ideas to help you be memorable with each encounter in your process.

A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes --

Sound familiar ? It's from Disney - if you don't dream / wish - you don't have a goal ! And if you don't have a goal, you won't want to do what's necessary to move foward.
I have said it many times here - but the following is from my favorite business author/motivator/advisor, Harvey Mackay: "My advice is always the same whether you are starting up or starting over: Keep your options open. Don't discount the value of any working experience. Expand your network at every opportunity, because you never know who might know someone who could use your talents and skills. Volunteer some time to get more and varied experience. Make sure you have a presence on social networking sites, especially LinkedIn and Facebook.
Perhaps the most important tip I can pass along is this: Never be afraid to ask for help. There are plenty of people who have created successful businesses, and even more who have built successful careers. Learning from others is essential, no matter how much you have learned from your own experience."

Top 10 Resume Mistakes #6 - #10

6. Too Focused on Job Duties

(REFER BACK TO OPENING PARAGRAPH – WHO IS THE AUDIENCE) Your resume should not be a list of job duties and responsibilities. The interviewer wants to know what your job was – so state what you did with how you made a difference at each company, providing specific examples. For each position held, give a brief synopsis of the scope of your responsibility. Then show how your performance benefited the company. Give examples of how past initiatives led to positive outcomes such as enhanced efficiency, faster time-to-market, monetary savings. Measureable Accomplishments are powerful - include actual performance figures. Focus on your most impressive technical projects/ accomplishments. What types of challenges did you face? What did you do to overcome the challenges? How did your performance improve the organization's bottom line?
For contract work, provide a bulleted list of your top projects, reason for hiring you, scope of the project, your approach to the project, work performed, and results.

7. ACRONYMS

NO ACRONYMS - Spell it out if it’s important – if not, omit it! Do not put BOTH the acronym and the entire phrase. Look for a balance in showcasing your achievements and remember not everyone knows the industry jargon - and if you are looking within your industry (ie: defense comes to mind) then everyone DOES know the jargon.

8. Listing Irrelevant Information - Points To Ponder

Don’t give a commercial for the Company. Mention what they do in the context of your job - after all you are either trying to leave them or have left them !

Many people include their interests, but they should include only those relating to the job.

For example, if a candidate is applying for a position as a ski instructor, he should list cross country skiing as a hobby.

Personal information, such as date of birth, marital status, height and weight, normally should not be on the resume.

Employers know you have professional references. You don’t need to state the obvious - but do have them listed on a separate document with both email and snail mail addresses, phone numbers, and how they know you (colleague - manager - subordinate)

9. Not Including Keywords

With so many companies using technology to sort and store resumes, it’s important to use relevant keywords through- out the resume. Determine keywords by reading job descriptions that interest you, and include the words you see repeatedly in your resume. If you want a good trick to include these easily - call me and I'll be glad to tell you.

10. Typos
Proofread and show your resume to several friends to have them proofread it as well. This document is a reflection of you and should be perfect in spelling AND grammar!

Top 10 Resume Mistakes ..... #5

#5. Not Including a Summary Section Which Makes an Initial Hard Sell

A Punched Up Summary is one of the job seeker's greatest tools. Candidates who have done their homework will know the skills and competencies important to the position. The summary should demonstrate the skill level and experiences directly related to the position being sought.

Creating a high-impact summary statement captures the attention of the manager, highlighting achievements and skills along with education or honors or awards - not as a list but within the contact of making a strong impression.

This is also where your soft skills need to be emphasized - interpersonal communications, ability to work collaboratively and commitment to achieving corporate goals. Too Short or Too Long
Technical candidates usually make one of two critical errors on their resumes -- either the document
is excessively long with excruciating detail on every assignment ever completed, or too short with
hardly any descriptions at all. Many people try to squeeze their experiences onto one page, because
they've heard resumes shouldn't be longer. By doing this, job seekers may delete impressive
achievements. Other candidates ramble on about irrelevant or redundant experiences.

There is no rule about resume length - No Rule! Use good judgement - And always ask a trusted advisor to review yours. Common Sense is King/Queen.

2. Functional Resume
In this age of high unemployment - the hiring managers don't have time to "read between the lines" - to not see the career progression and impact you made at each position clearly puts you at a disadvantage.
Unless you have an emergency situation, such as virtually no work history or excessive jobhopping,
avoid the functional format.

3. Personal Pronouns and ArticlesThere should be no mentions of "I" or "me," and only minimal use of articles.

4. Corporate ..... Employee

Great word Loyalty - but when it comes to employment, it may be that we have "grown up" and realize that the employer / employee relationship is a business relationship and loyalty has nothing to do with it! At least not the emotional self effacing type of "loyalty" our grandparents and some of our parents labored under.

The company pays you for your time and talents- you give up your time and use your talent for the money they pay you so you can live your life. End of story. I know - I' hear you saying, "but I love what I do" ... my answer to you is, yes and you can do it successfully at another company! That is especially true if you are like my candidates - who are specialists in what they do and the industry they do it in.

Which is why I always counsel that you should be a specialist - get as much training (updating of skills) and notice (awards or honors) that you can (write opinions/papers; join an organization; go to symposia). Anything that causes your employer to value you more - but always keep your resume up to date - If these last few years of rocketing downsizing haven't taught you anything, it should be the value of that!

But back to Loyalty. What is loyalty and what do you owe to the employer - well, you owe it to them to follow the parameters set for you to collect that paycheck. They could have hired someone else but they hired you - so not loyalty - but your own integrity should show you the way to conduct yourself at work. And before you agree to be employed by them - be certain you know what the expectations are. Read everything they give you - you have it for a reason - it is important to THEM - so it will become important to YOU. If your lunch hour is too short or your hours too long and you have no personal time off allotted - and you feel pressured or underpaid or without the resources you need to do the job ..... don't cheat them - just realize you are in the wrong environment......or accept that you have to give something to get something and how important is what you are getting as compared to what you are giving?

When you decide to move on - do not quit your current job! You are more sought after if you are employed. Here is the tough part - do your searching on your own hours - take some personal time (lunch?) - even if you have to take it out of your own pay - you will not waste the time you take (especially if you are paying for it!) and you can consider it an investment in your future. Then you will be focused at work - still holding up your end of the employment agreement. Don't take calls, surf the internet, or send emails on your employers time - not integretous! When you do take the new position, you will have been clear headed enough to be able to negotiate the terms in good faith (oh and don't forget about a reasonable start date - 2 weeks)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://reynoldsrecruiters.blogspot.com/2010/11/loyalty-corporate-employee.html' title='Loyalty? Well - you only need an online presence if you want to advance your career! That may seem like an extreme statement but social networking - LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc. - it's the wave of the present! No longer can we all go to work and keep our head down. In this unstable economy, it's imperative that you keep your eyes open for what's going on in your marketspace - and be prepared to react. So while you want to network with all you meet in your industry - also try to network with those people in "related" industries. An industry where you could slip into a position easily without an excessive amount of ramp up time. Jump onto one of the job boards and pull up jobs in an industry where your skills are close - see the particular skills required and start developing a few of those as a "shadow" career portfolio. Companies and people have thing happen which creates uncertainty about stability. Do I handle those questions - spoken or implied ?

First - assume the person on the other side of the desk knows the bad news - it's never really a secret. Now assess whether it's valuable to discuss with this particular person. Timing is important. If you aren't interested in taking the process any further - probably not. But if you want the person to join the company - or if you are the individual hoping to be offered the opportunity - then you might consider addressing whatever the issue is prior to offering the job - or prior to accepting the job. Always present the issue in the best possible way - by imparting what was learned through the experience and what changed.

This next part is important ...... and something I believe strongly ...... if the person/job is truly a good fit - you can't kill the deal ! If either side worries about a skeleton - then there will never be a happy collaboration between the parties. If the job isn't offered, then it isn't the right place for you. If the person turns down the offered employment, there would never be the hoped for loyalty in the long term and it's better to hire a temporary until the "right one" comes in.

INTERVIEWING TO WIN

Whether you are an employer or the potential employee - It is ALL about the questions. Ubuntu is the African tradition of teamwork and collaboration. A philosophy which considers the success of the group above that of the individual." Ubuntu believes in valuing the person for who they are; pay attention to the individual and help them achieve more - while expecting the best; and valuing the work separately.

In these tough economic times with high unemployment and smaller teams to "get the job done", just one person can have a huge impact on morale and results. Concern about keeping one's job, can cause even the most loyal employee to become competitive instead of collegial. A group's output is reflected in how much each person puts into their job - it's important to remember to let each member know they are valued. It eases the tension and in the long run will impact the success of your team, group, division, or company!

NETWORKING AS AN ART

DO YOU THINK .....
“The people I work with are part of my network.”
Yes and No - If you take the time to remind those you trust, that you are always keeping your eyes open, then MAYBE they will remember you when the next headhunter calls them with that opportunity you’ve been waiting for. The “best” contacts are busy people. You must create and nurture the networking aspect of the relationships. Start a list and log in some personal data - when there is a celebration - send a card ! (birthday, anniversary, etc.) They will remember that you remembered!

“Everyone's a good networking contact. I shouldn’t have to make nice.”
Definitely Not! It can be difficult to start to cultivate relationships for the networking benefit to yourself (seems selfish?) BUT, it takes time to get to know people personally – if you start with the experts, the influencers, and people who give back – you are ahead of the game. And YOU have to be a good and responsive contact for them to want to stay connected with you! You’ll get better help faster when you are obviously willing to help. Listen Actively - does that person need something you can supply? If you can’t discover anything, ask, “How can I help YOU?”

"Since we’re colleagues (sort of), I can just wing it.”
Really? Everyone’s time is valuable and to waste some of that contact’s time is really inexcusable. Do your homework before you ask for something – and be prepared with as much info from research as possible. Make your question interesting. Link your question or need to something of interest to your contact - you may be able to offer something new, the out-of-the–ordinary information and that way, you’re not just asking for a handout. Is there a payoff for him or her? Be patient – give them enough lead time to get back to you. Be grateful for the consideration even if you get nothing this time - you leave the door open for the future and can volunteer to be helpful to them.

"When I get the information, the interaction is over."
Selfish attitude! Get back in touch to tell your contact the outcome and what use you made of what he or she gave you. Professionals know how to maintain contact – whether a note or holiday greeting or both at random times during the year.

“I said, Thanks. That should be enough.”
Not true. Size your “Thank you” to match the size of the favor. Send a handwritten note. Take your contact out to lunch. Send a funny card. Write a note to your contact’s boss. Take every opportunity to give credit publicly.

My suggestion for good networking etiquette? Think about how it would feel to be on the other side of this - put yourself in the contact's shoes. Your Mother would be so proud! *-)

So - What Happened ?

Simply Put - Be in Reality. Whatever the reason/circumstance - accept that it wasn't meant to be your job and move on!
So the topic – Be in Reality.
First, let me say that I’ve been in the recruiting field for more than 25 years and nothing has changed. When I first started in this business, part of my training was to help separate myth from reality – the myth being that every person who met one of my clients would be hired, or every company who agreed to work with me would hire one of my candidates!
The reality is, recruiting (matching an employer with an employee) is a “numbers game”. If I do my job correctly every day - finding enough skilled candidates in my area of specialty and enough solid opportunities along the way, and represent them professionally to each other. Some matches will be successful, some will not – for a reason I may never know - but I have to keep the momentum going – keeping the pipeline filled for the next hire!
Translated into your position as the “candidate”; once you’ve decided to find a new job until you are walking through the door on day one of the new job is, on average, eight to nine months. There are the extremes (that’s why it is an average). Some folks will practically fall into their next job; and then there are those who are out of work for 18 months and counting.
This can be a long and arduous process if you aren't in reality. Remember that every day – make your search a “numbers game” and stick to it. If you don’t do something today to move your search along, the reality is - you are adding more days of unemployment on the back end!
I have learned in working alone, that making myself accountable by writing it downI does wonders for my own reality. Often, when things aren’t going very good and I think I have been really working hard; I go back to my lists and find it’s more like hardly working!
My advice to you is be your own boss. Keep lists: lists of leads and how you have followed up, lists of friends you contacted and asked for help, lists of where you sent your resume, lists of who you’ve interviewed with.
I will assume that you are adding certifications or taking training that you lacked to make yourself more marketable (if you haven’t – what are you waiting for?)
But there is one more thing to consider - make a list of alternative employment and then learn what you would have to do to become employed in those alternatives. Choose one and pursue it simultaneously with job hunting in your own specialty. Don’t wait until you need to “think outside the box”, do it on the front end. This change in thinking could revitalize your enthusiasm
and your creativity, and ultimately be the catalyst for you finding new employment quickly (quickly here being a relative term).
Before you find yourself downsized is a good time to take stock of your employability and your finances in order to be prepared. Then, if the unthinkable happens, you will have the beginnings of an action plan by truly understanding where you are starting from.

Top 10 Resume Mistakes

1. Too Focused on Job Duties - Your resume should not be a list of job duties and responsibilities. State how you made a difference at each company, providing specific examples.
2. Lose the Objective – Here is your objective – A NEW JOB ! That is the purpose of any resume
3. Too Short or Too Long Many people try to squeeze their experiences onto one page, because they've heard resumes shouldn't be longer. By doing this, job seekers may delete impressive achievements. Other candidates ramble on about irrelevant or redundant experiences. There is no rule about resume length - A resume is a tool to get you an interview
4. Using Personal Pronouns and Articles There should be no mentions of "I" or "me," and only minimal use of articles.
5. Listing Irrelevant Information - 3 Points
** Don’t give a commercial for the Company. Mention what they do in the context of your job.
** Many people include their interests, but they should include only those relating to the job. For example, if a candidate is applying for a position as a ski instructor, he should list cross-country skiing as a hobby.
** Personal information, such as date of birth, marital status, height and weight, normally should not be on the resume.
6. Using a Functional Resume When You Have a Good Career History - My experience shows me that hiring managers do not see the actual career progression and impact you made at each position. Everyone is busy - don't make their job more difficult. Unless there is an exceptional reason, such as virtually no work history or excessive job-hopping, avoid the functional format.
7. Not Including a Summary Section That Makes an Initial Hard Sell This is one of the job seeker's greatest tools. Candidates who have done their homework will know the skills and competencies important to the position. The summary should demonstrate the skill level and experiences directly related to the position being sought.
Create a high-impact summary statement which captures the attention of the manager, highlighting achievements and skills along with education if advanced, and clearance if you have or have had one. Soft skills need to be emphasized - interpersonal communications, ability to work collaboratively and commitment to achieving corporate goals. Make sure your personality shines through. The employer should find you to be likeable and well suited for the team - not every personality fits every team.
8. Not Including Keywords - With so many companies using technology to store resumes, it’s important to use relevant keywords throughout the resume. Determine keywords by reading job descriptions that interest you, and include the words you see repeatedly in your resume. You can always use SKILLS to list some additional technology for this purpose.
9. References Upon Request - Employers know you have professional references. You don’t need to state the obvious - and be sure to bring them with you on the interview - Do not include them on the resume.
10. TYPOS - Proofread and show your resume to several friends to have them proofread it as well. This document is a reflection of you and your work - it should be perfect.

Taking the Interview In the Direction YOU Want It To Go

Most of us are anxious, at the very least, when going into an interview. Know why? Because none of us are perfect – and this is the ultimate judgement situation! You can be sure there are some interviewers who frame questions to invite a negative response – they are trying to screen you out!

Okay so now you know why – and I hear you thinking, “I know the solution, Practice!”

Well yes – but do you know what to practice? Should you lie? Truth is - the guilty can’t help but confess; when a candidate overtalks about a particular topic, it is a sign to many who are hiring, to probe. And that will really make you feel uncomfortable. While the truth is always best – there are ways to be truthful that leaves everyone feeling okay – ie: there are no bodies under the bus!

My suggestion? Practice changing all situations into positive experiences in your mind. Reframe each negative situation to find the lesson that improved you as a person/employee. Instead of emphasizing where you were uncomfortable, your response will impart a confident, pleasant, and positive attitude. You won’t have to force or fake it! If certain situations still cause you to be angry or frustrated or defending yourself in your head, try to not spend a lot of time on the topic during the interview. If the interviewer wants more information about any topic – let them ask for it. And that will be your signal to know that you might be uncomfortable and you have to pay attention to your answers. Bring yourself back mentally, to your talking points. Those items that answer positive questions: what are your strengths, what are your biggest achievements, how are you a good fit for this job.

Start with these:
Why did you leave? (Especially if it was short term?
** Even if it was a lay-off, talk about what you were able to accomplish, the positive experience you had, and what you learned. And try to relate something at that job, to the opportunity for which you are interviewing.

Tell me about a difficult boss/ client/ work situation?
** Every relationship teaches us something – positive or negative - about ourselves. This is a great opportunity to explain how you have matured. (without too much detail about the negative aspects !)

What are your weaknesses?
** Talk about how you have grown in your work experiences
Use examples of your strengths and how you got those….Starting with the strength (“which will be an asset to this employer because …..”) – Remember we ALL have to grow up and we ALL stumble – just don’t make yours monumental!

Finally, let me remind you something I’ve learned after many years as a recruiter – if you do not receive an offer – there is a reason – and probably the best thing that could have happened. Even if you feel as though you’ll never find a job. We spend much of our adult lives working – no one wants to be miserable during that time!

Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open to Opportunity and to Suggestions. You can’t lose a job that was meant to be yours…..

Creative Strategy !

So how do you stay on top of it all when you're unemployed? Here is a thought to start your creative juices flowing -

Volunteer for a symposium / trade show / conference / technical talks - any event ! As long as you are in a responsible position and visible - often there are reimbursements for expenses in these instances. If nothing is going on in your general area - create something ! From an afternoon/evening to a few days - call organizers from other events and ask how they got it done - or call me for suggestions !

There are multiple benefits in this activity. You will be busy and engaged daily which keeps your attitude up; being surrounded by all of that technical energy will enthuse and inform you and help you stay current with the companies in your area of expertise; and networking possibilities!

I suggest how you handle the networking in this environment is to say hello to, and exchange cards with, as many people as you can. A short exchange regarding their company and then something about the organizing effort to get the event put together. You want to quickly move on - even though you might be tempted to try to "sell yourself". However, you need to meet as many folks as you can - and determine who can help and who can't when you have more time and both of you are not distracted by the sights and sounds around you. When the event is over - you can start to call and email your resume to all of those people you connected with - you have a frame of reference to begin a new conversation.

A short note about business cards for the unemployed - make it creative and different - something that will cause it (and you) to be remembered - color / layout!

I hope you find this helpful - if you have any topics you would like discussed in this column - I would be happy to oblige. Simply post a request.

Overcoming the "Unemployment" Blues

A seasoned professional finding themselves unemployed or underemployed - has taken care of business, read the books and attended career counseling sessions. It's important to remember that each day offers choices and if you want to open the door when "opportunity knocks" you have to be prepared. When you go anywhere, think about the image you present - are you someone whom people would want to recommend or add to their staff ? Nope, I'm not "Miss Sunshine" every day either - but I do know that, like it or not, the world judges me by what they experience. And people talk - good and bad. Making the connections are critical and, what’s more important? Staying in touch. Sending an interesting article, point out a helpful website, share more info or tips about a subject you talked about. The time to reach out to your network is continuously – there is never enough time to develop those relationships when the your need is immediate. You can write to someone who has written an article in one of the many publications you receive. If you have something of interest (a question or comment on their article is always flattering) Call them ! And take a page from the Sales guys/gals in your organization - NEVER go anywhere without your business card. One more point...managing your contacts - you can't stay in touch without a data base. There are plenty, free. This is the other page from Sales. High School, College, all of your jobs (managers, subordinates, and peers), your hobby organizations, your community, the parents of your kids friends - keep them listed and keep in touch. Here's a true story - my son followed his wife when she was transfered to an island - He learned of one of the few great job opportunities while working out at the gym - with another Dad who just happened to be, the hiring manager.

Your Resume is An Attention Getting AD !

So many times I see resumes being used as a comprehensive "book" of "what I did in my career" The goal of a resume is to get attention, peak curiosity, and get you an opportunity to sell yourself on the job ! Not 1 page - that's outdated - what you need is a STRONG summary - using action words - and some real work accomplishments - just enough to get the "eyes" to draw down for more information. Then a short description of each job with some excitment generated that maybe you could do "that" again! Make them want to meet you. It is clear that every time you are called for a job interview, it may not interest you - BUT - (big info next) - every time you get yourself invited to meet with the person who is hiring offers you several outcomes besides a job. It builds your network of professionals; it gives you insight into how they do business and how they manage their workflow and people (good for when they might be the competition); it gives you practice with your interviewing skills so when your "dream job" comes along - you are on top of your game; you might actually have a job created for you (it has happened! and yes - in THIS economic environment!).

Managing Your Inbox

I've been so busy at times - the obvious solution eludes me.
Create an email for managing your career - don't use your home or work (and changeable) email - but get gmail or yahoo. It can be forwarded to your home email like an alias and even routed into a separate folder for viewing at your leisure. It's a great way to manage all of the email you will be getting when you sign up for my blog or other career related documents. Also good for putting on the resume as a point of contact - you never know when someone will try to reach you with an outstanding opportunity a couple of years from now - and the email remains a constant. If you keep it separated from the routine, it won't overpower the inbox and you'll be more likely to actually read some of those hot topics which help keep the focus on the road ahead.

Welcome ..... DAY 1

First posting to the new blog.... Thoughts, ideas, recommendations related to keeping yourself happily, and gainfully, employed. And if the unexpected happens - you will be better prepared to spring into action on your job search. Given the economy - it's almost the expected - not the "unexpected". But I digress. My profile is on LinkedIn - for free. If you don't know this networking tool - you should. Networking is the most productive use of your "career plan" time.
